The Vieux Carre was invented in New Orleans in the 1920's. It is a powerful drink with a lot of flavor. You can serve this is a chilled cocktail glass, or pour it into a rocks glass with a single, large ice cube.
- 1 oz Rye Whiskey
- 1 oz Cognac
- 1 oz Sweet Vermouth
- 2 dashes of Angostura Bitter
- 2 dashes of Peychaud's Bitters
- 1 bar spoon of Benedictine
Chill a cocktail glass (with ice... and water or simple syrup).
In a mixing glass add Rye, Cognac, Vermouth and both bitters. Add good ice. Stir. Dump the water from serving glass. Stain contents into serving glass. Spoon on the Benedictine. Garnish with a lemon swath.
Optionally serve over a single big ice cube. If so the Benedictine goes in the mixing glass.
