I know... this is way off topic. The Lexus ES 300 is NOT, and may never be, a classic. So why is it here. Because I expect to use to get me closer to owning a classic.

This is a companion to this month's Car Corner article where I describe buying myself a 1997-2001 Lexus ES 300 as a daily driver, and a backup car. So please Bare with me. Once I have it, and something modern for fun, the next step would be a classic car as I have been looking at in this column for 10 years now.

Here are some examples of this car I have seen on AutoTrader or Craigslist in the last few month. They give you an idea what i will be looking for sometime after the summer of 2015. I left out description because these are still fairly new. If anything important was mention I reiterate it in my comments.

2001 Lexus ES 300, 93,836 mi., Silver/Black - $6,999

Source: AutoTrader

Found: 4/4/2014

Comments: The wood steering wheel is a very nice touch. The black interior (maybe charcoal gray) looks elegant, but might be too hot for South Central Texas.

2001 Lexus ES 300, 77,424 mi., Black/Tan - $7,095

Source: AutoTrader

Found: 4/4/2014

Comments: There were no interior pictures, but the mileage and price are reasonable. Not sure I want black. So far this is the best mileage/price compromise I have seen.

1999 Lexus ES 300, 48,569 mi., Red/Tan - $9,995

Source: AutoTrader

Found: 11/25/2013

Comments: This car started me on the path to buying one of these cars. Under 50K miles. Wow! I tried to get a loan to buy this car in Nov, 2013. Unfortunately no one would lend me money on a car this old. Oops!

NOTE: NADA's "Clean Retail" for this car is $7,162, which accounts for the low miles. It would be a tough choice to ignore that an pay this much for this car. But if I could... I would offer $8,000 cash and see where it went. Assuming this car is still for sale when I have $8,000 cash burning a hole in my pocket.

I saved this to my "saved cars" in AutoTrader. See if it is still then when this goes live.

2000 Lexus ES 300, 71,249 mi., White/Tan - $9,295

Source: AutoTrader

Found: 4/4/2014

Comments: These cars look great in white. The wood steering wheel is a nice touch that I like. Also... this car has my favorite wheels. These look more modern than the usual wheels on these cars, without looking out of place.

2000 Lexus ES 300, 136k mi., White/Yan - $5,995

Source: Craigslist

Found: 4/4/2014

Comments: I find a lot of very high mileage cars on Craigslist... and a lot of junk. Go Figure for a free website. This one stood out for having the wood steering wheel and the wheels I like. Price is decent. I would prefer under 100K miles, but this isn't too bad. I would go look at it and see if cash would get the price down.
