Odd Balls

NOTE: This column displays cars I have found on the Internet. I am not selling them. Please follow the links if you are interest in a car. Be mindful of the date this article was published. For an explanation why I do this read the original column here.

I have been watching some of Jay Leno's cars on his web site. I have heard Jay talk about lots of people want to sell him their car. I assume a lot of people think he will pay more than top dollar for a car. I don't know if that is true, but Jay says he doesn't buy just a car... he buys the story.

I saw a clip of a 1967 Chrysler Imperial and Jay tells the story of the car. He bought it even though he had no interest in the car itself. This inspired me to do something different this month. I did a different kind of search. I went to Collector Car Trader and entered the following search criteria:

  1. Price range $7,000 - $10,000. I wanted to follow the root of this column and its original 15K budget. At less than 10K I would have money left over to get it ready for frequent driving. At over 7K I was hoping to weed out the crap.
  2. Year range 1961 - 1972. Hey, I am a Muscle Car fanatic.
  3. Location: Texas. I did this for two reasons. First, it is more realistic. I can look at cars in Texas easily. Second, I didn't want to page through hundreds and hundreds of cars.

In the end, I was trying to put myself in the mindset that I had a large amount of disposable income, but wanted to look for something different and affordable. No care of what the car was worth, just that it was something different and might be a cool car to drive around and add to my collection. O.K., these are odd balls, so maybe it would only seem cool to me. But that is the point. Jay doesn't follow trends, he buys cars that pique his interest. I tried to emulate that here.

Comments: Now this is different. Talk about an odd ball. This van takes me back to the 70's that I can't even remember. I love the mag wheel and side pipes, but would have to take this vehicle in a new direction. This reminds me of the 76 van they did on Overhaulin.

1968 Chevrolet Chevelle Wagon - $7,250

Description: Red, 307 eng, auto, pwr steering, Runs very well, Good Interior, Solid car - drive it anywhere.

Source: Collector Car Trader

Found: 5/24/2008

Comments: Station wagons are different. This looks like a low mileage original. I would love to make a mileage project of this car. How good could we get the mileage? We would need to add fuel injection and an overdrive transmission at the minimum. I think 25 mpg on the highway is possible. Could we get it to 30?

1968 VW Van - $9,950

Description: Just in from California Runs and drives great Nice paint lots of room to haul stuff. Full curtains all around for privacy and camping rebuilt motor 4 speed trans nice paint Great on gas and low maintenance.

Source: Street Dreams

Found: 5/23/2008

Comments: If the Chevy van above didn't let you think I was looking at different cars then this should. I feel like running out and getting a bunch of flowers to stick all over this vehicle. Mileage should hopefully be good enough this could make an interesting daily driver. This van makes we want to dig out all those 70-80's VW Trend magazines for ideas on a retro customizing job.

1969 Chevrolet Caprice - $9,000

Description: 2dr HardTop, Green on Green, 70,776 Original Miles. Original Interior, Original 427 eng. Tilt Column, Pwr windows & Seat, New carpet, Dynamat on floors, Solid Body, Needs little paint & little body work. Runs Beautiful.

Found: 5/24/2008

Comments: Her we have a low mileage big block Caprice. This is a little different. This is a car that might be interesting all fixed up like new. Big Block power with power windows and such. Cool!

1970 Cadillac Eldorado - $8,000

Description: 67,000 miles, new paint & vinyl top, leather interior, runs great, 1-owner.

Source: Collector Car Trader

Found: 5/24/2008

Comments: Low mileage, one owner car. Now we're talking. A good friend of mine's father had an Eldorado about this year when we were in high school. This is when Cadillacs were still known to be special. Where else could you get a huge front wheel drive car with 500 cubic inches of V-8 power. I love it.

1971 Chevrolet Camaro - $7,950

Description: '71 Camaro Coupe, original 350-V8, automatic, factory air conditioning, power steering, power disc brakes, tilt column, Rallye wheels, super solid original unrestored Texas car. Only 2 owners. Runs & Drives good.

Source: Auto Trends

Found: 5/23/2008

Comments: O.K. So a mainstream car made it. I found it with that search. How can I pass up looking at a 2 owner, Texas Camaro? I can't. I would call today if I had the cash. This is exactly the kind of car I would like to get as a father/son project car.
