Go Spurs Go!

I am not a big sports fan, but since marrying a San Antonio Spurs fan I have been a loyal Spurs fan myself. In case you didn’t know the San Antonio Spurs won the NBA Championship against the New York Knicks.

I am from NY. I spent the first 22 years of my life there. My best friend lives there. He is a Knicks fan. Which leads to my point... The Bet! My friend bet me the Knicks would win. He put up one week of construction labor on the house I will be building. (For those of you that don’t know, I bought land this year and will be building a house in the Spring of 2000, or 2001.)

My friend is in the market for a house, so I countered with helping him move. Needless to say he will be spending a week in San Antonio come this spring, or the spring of aught-1. Get your plane reservations in early, Chip.

The ultimate topper would be if I could get a couple of the Spurs teammates to come by the "job site" when my friend is there to help rub it in. He He.

Double Workouts progressing

Last month I told you about my double workout plan. I am trying to gain at least 10 pounds of muscle in 8 weeks. So far things are going slower than expected. I was up three pounds after two weeks, but am down a pound after two more weeks. And I am on vacation for a week at the end of June. We will see. I have 4 more weeks when I get back from vacation. My current weight is 217.0, up from a starting weight of 214.8.

The Web

I have continued working on the web site that will eventually replace (?) our client server application. I developed three prototypes to show to the project sponsor. The main concerns for me was dealing with workstations that are only 800 X 600 resolution. This doesn’t leave a lot of space for the amount of information we are used to reporting.

Fortunately, the sponsor gave the direction to build for our company standard of 1024 X 768. We will provide instructions on how to set monitors to the appropriate resolution for those that aren’t 1024 X 768. What a relief on my part.

The sponsor made a couple of suggestions at the demo. I implemented those changes and asked for a raise. Policy is that you have to learn new technology and use it to deserve a raise. Rather that weight for them to give me a raise, I asked for one. I will need the money for the bigger house payment I am getting ready for.

Network Cards

I was buying some movies on DVD from as a Father’s Day present. So while I was at it I ordered an Ethernet cards for my computer. I will need it for the upcoming cable modem. Unfortunately, I can’t test it. I may try to buy a cable to connect my laptop directly to my PC without the need for a hub. This will make file transfers between the two super fast. Using the parallel port is a major drag. 10Mbit vs. 115Kbit? It may be worth buying a cheap hub.

Cable Modem Status

The latest word I received about my cable modem is that Paragon/Road Runner will go live in early July. Classes for the self-install should be about the same time. I will keep you posted.

We didn’t get to go to the coast this year. Instead we got caught up in Spurs Fever. We cancelled our trip and stayed in town to see the parade and enjoy the celebrating. We spent as much money on Spurs memorabilia as we would have spent on the trip. It was fun, and we have some great stuff to decorate the game room of the new house. When it is built.

Laptop on loan

I was not looking forward to my vacation this year at the coast much. Although it would have been relaxing, I was unable to take the laptop this time. And I would miss it. Last time I used it as a giant walkman to play MP3 files. It helped pass the boring fishing hours great. We even used it for the ride home. My son would listen to his tapes on the car stereo through a set of headphones. We listened to the laptop with a couple of small Sony speaker thrown up on the dash. Cool!

Alas, I had to give the laptop to a coworker when she broke her leg in a biking accident. The laptop is configured to dial into our LAN environment. When done, it is exactly like being in the office, except slower of course.

So while she was lying around with her leg elevated working from home I was living it up in Spurs celebration.

My manager has a new laptop on order for himself. And I think he is going to get me a newer one. That would be great. The latest ones our company is supplying are Dell 300MHz PIIs with 128MB. Should be quite a bit faster than the current 233MHz Pentium MMX with 64MB. I’ll keep you posted.

All in all I thought this was a slow month. Hopefully next month I will have the web site far enough along to be close to moving it to production. And hopefully I will be able to report on a super fast cable modem.

See you next month.
